I'm with Okenobi personally.

My parents used to smoke when I was younger, and TBH it never really bothered me because most parents that I knew of seemed to smoke in the early-to-mid 90s. I have not been adversely affected.

The fact is that if it was really that harmful (and AFAIK the jury is still out on the dangers of "passive smoking") then people would have social services knocking on their door left, right and centre removing the children from a "dangerous" environment.

As for restricting where people can smoke, I'm sorry but I don't agree with you big_D, I can understand that it affects your medical condition but it also affects mine (asthma) yet I would never seek to stop someone from smoking - I re-locate myself according to my own medical needs, after all I don't think it's reasonable for everyone to be aware of every medical condition on the planet. I don't agree with the smoking ban because I personally believe that pubs etc being private property they should have the right to decide their own policy on smoking (it is after all, THEIR business and THEIR land). If I don't agree with the policy then I can go elsewhere, that's called market forces.

"They're my kids and I can do what I want" does not wash really. I would bet the same people who smoke in confined spaces with their kids would not harm them physically or mentally in any way. So why fill their lungs with your 5hit? It makes no sense to me. If you know its not good for them then why do it? I'm pretty sure there was some evidence to show smoking in front of kids is more likely to make them smokers later in life.

I'm also amazed by the amount of people who say they enjoy smoking as an activity. Then when they stop smoking they admit it was purely an addiction they fed. Even my missus swore to me she enjoyed smoking time and time again. Then she stopped and admitted it was the adiction talking. Dont shoot the messenger. I dont care who smokes. But doing it infront of young children is wrong. Plain and simple.

I was brought up in the 80/90's too when everyone smoked including my parents and I hated it.

And the hand-rolling is better versus manufactured cigs is basically a myth.

I wish rape was illegal. It's not natural in this country, and although my hay fever is so mild it's usually unnoticeable the shear quantity of sticky yellow hell that comes off the fields around here quite literally reduces me to tears. The worst thing is when I'm driving. Unless I know in advance and can switch on the recirculating (except my new car doesn't have it) then I can end up driving almost blinded, because it hits me so fast.

The double entendre is my preferred genre of humour to post on this forum. I enjoy the challenge of accurately expressing my views while conveying the most embarrassing or politically incorrect sub context possible.

I also enjoy satire, irony and sarcasm. Unfortunately, they are often misunderstood. Toilet humour is safer.

Like so many things in this country that are getting legislated about, this is stupid. Education is the key. Parents need to be empowered to make their own decisions based on the best available information. In the same way that all of us need to be empowered to take decisions about our own lives, without state interference.

This is the course of action to take. And reiterates what I said earlier in this thread.

However, this point should be dealt with by responsible individuals who make reasoned judgments themselves, weighing up all sides of the equation on an individual level, and not just relying on the definitive polar law of illegal / legal and just letting it wash over them like the tide.

:D I always used to get funny looks, when I was younger, when I said that the only thing I was allergic to was rape!

Here rape (the act) is "Vergewaltigung" and the plant is Raps, so it doesn't work - and now I seem to be allergic to cigarette smoke as well...

I'd rather smokers had a separate room, with an air lock or separate entrance, to the disgusting habit of smoking in front of the main door to an establishment! For a place of business, it is a dreadful first impression for the visitor to the company, to be forced to walk through a thick wall of cigarette smoke!

For something like a shopping mall or supermarket, it means I can't enter the premises and do my shopping without an inhaler and/or anti-histamine... :(
