The only reason I prefer plastic to glass on safety grounds is because in the clubs which serve glass you ALWAYS get a lot of broken glass on the floor. Crunch crunch crunch isn't very nice, and if you fall over you could get cut (and you're more likely to fall with all the glass to slip over).
My favourite nightclub, and the one I go to probably three or four times a month has a capacity of over 3,000 and serves glass. I have never worried about being glassed, but I wish they did serve plastic as mentioned.

I've only had one occasion where I've had a pint glass thrown in my general direction, and that was by a drunk woman who didn't understand 'We're closed, go home.' As it was, the glass actually fell short, landed on it's base and didn't smash.

I'll look into the more sturdy plastic version, I had the flimsy plastic ones in mind. And the reason the flimsy ones can only be used once is that it's they only hold a proper measure on first use, not on subsequent uses.
As for using plastic generally, I find my pint doesn't taste as nice, but perhaps that psychological...

Don't like drinking out of plastic generally as you often get a slight taste of the plastic itself, or it has a slightly weird texture, all of which is distracting from the Coke in hand

I think it may be the smell - there's a slight but distinctive smell to a plastic container and a different texture on your mouth, with takes some getting used to. Coke always tastes better in a glass bottle, as does beer. Metal cans often give drinks a slightly metallic taste and plastic ones leave the drink tasting a bit weird.

I guess it depends what your drinking though...If it's some gawdawful lager which already tastes like cats piss then I'm sure a hint of plastic won't matter. If you looking to actually enjoy the taste of a nice pint then you'll not want that hint of plastic...

This is true, although the fact that such poor quality lager exists and people are willing to drink it probably explains why the UK has such a problem with alcohol - if people took the time to pick their beers carefully and appreciate them, they probably wouldn't spend so many nights in police cells with traffic cones on their heads. It's the difference between drinking for the sake of it and drinking because you like what you are drinking.
