Post subject:  Photoshop’s new feature - a problem
I know we like to protect our work - some even put watermarks on their images. Stock photo sites do this too - but here’s a new feature from Adobe which will let users of a future version of Photoshop remove those marks very easily, whilst maintaining the integrity of the image (if the video is to be believed).

I’m not so sure about the last example in this video, but if you can remove posts, lens fares and entire trees from an image, then stripping out watermarks bearing important copyright information is clearly within it’s abilities.

That last example was quite impressive. But it was more making things up rather than fixing a spot or removing an object, unless it was drawing on information from the original files that we didn't see. I wonder how it would stand up to scrutiny.

People spotted the creation of what looks like a bird in the last example, and some are calling “April Fool” on it.

I think the bird people spotted is just the mouse cursor. It doesn't move from when he magic wands the white background.

If that's real then that is insane!

The new content aware delete feature is a pretty cool, I watched the official preview on the Adobe site, but I can only find it on other sites now. I was pretty certain it was real, the video I saw wasn't on 1st April...

Although it could be a problem removing watermarks with © issues, as for helping photographers and designers alter large areas of an image, in a much quicker way than before, then it'll be a key reason for me to move from CS3 to CS5.

I'd be happier if it was CS only, rather than drifting into Elements. Mind you, if someone is going to steal someone's work, a few features here or there make no difference. You need to protect IP in other ways, and chase up infringements, only upload low-res files to the web etc.

I suppose if one was paranoid about this sort of thing it could be viewed as a way to push digital watermarking features or services like DigiMark (a demo/trial version of which seems to be bundled with PS anyway).
It's unlikely there will be a totally foolproof way to watermark images but if all you're trying to do is deter casual theft then there are ways to do it.

It's definitely real, both the content aware fill and content aware delete, seen them working myself today! Very clever, although only if the picture is setup just right, otherwise you'll need a fair bit of after tweaking. I suspect the CA aware healing brush is more use, now I'm tempted to upgrade! 8-)
