Do you have a Mac? Does it meet the min specs for Aperture?

I think that's the key factor in the first stage of deciding one way or the other.

Get a trial of LR2 and of Aperture and see which you get along with best?

HK: I have a white 13in MacBook. It is about 2 or 3 years old. I got it off my sister-in-law so not too sure of its age. It is running Leopard 10.5.7 but it came with Tiger.

Has an Intel 64bit processor
1GB RAM
Intel graphics.

Edd: Thanks for the links. Will try them and see.

Hmm, with all of the hundreds of photos I've taken over the years, I've never edited or retouched a single one of them... Apart from cropping or resizing images for loading in Imageshack, for sharing on forums, I don't think I've altered anything.

I've just watched the videos on Apple's Aperture 2 website. It looks interesting, but I really don't see anything it does, that makes it a "must have" product.

Can I just ask, what are the light tables for? The demonstration video just seemed to show it as a large canvas for throwing multiple photos onto, but didn't really tell me why I would want to... :?

I think it's meant to be used for comparing images on a virtual lightbox. It's something I've done for real over the years - dozens of similar transparencies on a light box, pored over with a loupe until you either fall asleep or actually make a decision on which one to go with for the design job in hand.

I have to say, I've not used the feature, but I can see it being used if I had a set of product shots that I needed to select from.

That's probably because . . .

However, if you need to keep track of hundreds or thousands of images, adding keywords, captions and various adjustments - especially RAW images - then LR and Aperture are invaluable.
