OK, so I've taken the general advice- the best you can afford, but there is a difference between what I can afford if I push the limits and what I would actually like to spend. I would like to spend around £100 on the tripod alone, but would stretch to £150 if there was a real advantage in paying the extra cash. So, I am considering the Giotto MT9260. Apart from its weight (2KG) I can't see a thing wrong with it both now and for the future when I can afford to stretch to that fast telephoto lens. I realise that this is sans head(s) so I would be looking at nearer £175-£200 all in, but there we are. One thing positive that I have noticed is the maximum height of 164cm which is more than most. I am not sure how often this would come in really handy, but being tall (6ft) it can't hurt to have that little bit of extra height capability. I have looked for the one that Heather and Mark (apparently) have- the MT9242 and I am not sure that it is still widely for sale- a quick Google keeps bringing up links to Warehouse Express, but they no longer sell it, it seems. I have considered the lightweight models, but I am not shelling out a lot extra just for weight reduction or going smaller on what I expect to be my main- if not my only- tripod. I have searched the forum and not found as many tripod mentions as I thought that there must be, so it has to be a new thread. I have to get one soon, now that I am building up my collection of ND filters and grey grad's And, while we are on the subject, can anyone recommend a good all round starter head as I am really in unfamiliar territory there? I see a lot of mention of ball heads, but need to do some reading before making a decision of my own. Thanks. |

If you're going Giottos, they make a nice range of heads at surprisingly reasonable prices. I went with one of these: http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-gio ... d/p1025889 It's like all the Giottos stuff, well engineered and well thought out. Thoroughly recommended - particularly for the quick release plate to let you take your camera off quickly. All the heads screw onto the tripod's standard threaded boss, so theoretically you can buy any manufacturers' head to fit the Giottos tripod. Rather than test the theory, I opt for keeping it in the same manufacturer. |

Thanks, Heather. That is a decent looking head at a reasonable price. |

I got this: http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk/item/755-101B/ The head is fairly standard stuff but the tripod is lovely IMO. Has a removable centre column for flexibity and low down macro shots, etc. The head is something I might upgrade in the future but its just fine for now. |

It's a very capable tripod though I did come up against the limitations of mine whilst in the lakes earlier this year and had to defer to the tripod of Mr. Miners to get the shot I wanted, but to only once hit the limitation of the tripod in the two years I've had it is certainly no bad thing, in my opinion. For those wondering, the tripod he had to defer to was (and is) a Manfrotto 055 XProB. |

I'm guessing, and don't know Tim's tripod at all, but the Manfrotto can get very, very low, so possibly that was it. |

That is even heavier than the Giotto, but goes another 14cm higher over the MT9260 AND it is cheaper. Would you recommend it, Nick? or are there niggles that would make you reluctant? |

The extra height would be an advantage. I find my Giottos sometimes a little low when out landscape snapping, and I'm loath to extend the column too far if it's windy. Bending over a tripod can be bad for my back. =o( Still, I like the lightness and the robustness. And the standard carrying bag, extra shoulder strap and toolkit. Giottos make a good package. |

It's too heavy for me to comfortably carry around for any amount of time. Short photo trips and it's okay, anything longer and it's weight really starts to show. Mark |

As Edd said, the Manfrotto can get very low to the ground, centimetres in fact. That was what Mr Ark wanted to do. It is heavier than the Giotto, that's true, but I prefer it that way as it makes it more stable in windy conditions. Are we going to start a Giotto v Manfrotto battle now, like the Canon/Nikon flamewar in the other thread? :-D |

I would recommend it. It's extremely versatile. |

With the weight of my equipment without the tripod, I hardly notice the extra bulk! |
