Had a quick browse through the extended photo info. The maximum focal length of my lens is 135 mm (and it's EF which would factor it up to around 215mm) and I was using 1/60 etc... shutter speeds.

Just had a listen to the Martin Bailey podcast about long exposures (Heather's thread) and I'm considering buying a tripod. Thing is though I don't really have a clue about what to go for.
If I went for something like this... CLICKY ...would I also have to buy a tripod head?

Something like this... CLICKY?

What do you guys use? What would you recommend?

Yes, and yes. I have one of those tripods, but a different head. It's a very sturdy tripod and does a hell of a lot (you can invert the central column so the camera hangs down from the tripod, or set it horizontally, and the legs splay right out so you can have the camera almost at ground level). That's also a very good price - that model comes with my personal recommendation.

After a similar request I made in the old place, I got a Giottos M9242, and subsequently a matching 3-way head.

Tripod: http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product ... ku=1017913

(Even better price than I paid. It comes with a neat carry bag, set of tools and another shoulder strap.)
I'd personally recommend that tripod (working clicky). I have one and it's great.
I use the MH 7303 fluid ball head (top of image) which doesn't present any portrait problems like those Heather states.

I have the Manfrotto 055xProB and the ball head everybody suggests is this

I have to say it's a great combo and sturdy enough for my 100-400 L IS USM lens/camera and grip.

Cool, I'm going to go for the 055xProB tripod with the head that I linked. £200 is stretching my budget a bit.

Well I ordered the tripd and head and they rang me to say the head wasn't in stock and wouldn't be for a while so I went for the ball head instead.

Arrives tomorrow!

I've been playing around with the tripod tonight and I love it!

It feels so much nicer having a proper tripod than a flimsy little plastic play toy thingy.

And taken a couple of shots to see the results and it's rock steady! Even over 8 second exposures (just messing around indoors) I'm getting absolutely crisp focus on the finest details!

Love it!

Just need to take it out into the real world now.

Thanks for the tips!
