Work has given me a budget of £500 to buy a new camera for my department. I have a free hand on what to buy the only stipulation is that is must be able to photo objects the size of pens/cups with some clarity?
Any thoughts?
compact G10?

You know I'm going to suggest the Nikon CoolPix P5000/P5100.
It's got an amazing macro setting.

Likewise the Canon PowerShot G10 or G11. You might be able to get the G10 discounted and spend the rest on something else.

A couple of options away from the Nikon/Canon fans........

What about one of the new Fujifilm cameras with the EXR sensor tech (e.g. F200EXR). It seems to be winning awards all over the place fpr its low light capability sensor(as you probably wont get away with using a flash in macro)?

Or how about the Panasonic DMC-FZ35? It has Leica lens (f/2.8-f/4.4), 1cm macro in wide angle and has extra features like 18x zoom and 720p video for a bit of versatility.

Panasonic is good. I hear good things about their compacts.

Sigma DP2?
or Panasonic LX-3 which is like the Leica dlux 4 only cheaper but even that can be had for around £500.
