Nah, it's a great to let younger people handle the pricey stuff. Gives you something to aim for, and it's much more real if you've handled it. Like Nick says, that test drive in a Porsche - you might not be able to afford one then, but in the future who knows? That memory of handling the 'blad/driving a Porker might decide where that cash goes. It's well within their interests to let you have a go. I'm a bit jealous, btw.

Yeah, but they're expensive because they're good. And medium format still has, to a lot of people's eyes, a better output than digital. It's also a great format for finding out if the person behind the shutter knows what they're about, it's much less forgiving. *goes back to leafing through his big pile of Mamiya brochures* |

I've heard that medium format does make a better photographer of you and I regularly hear people recommending an amateur like myself gets an old MF system to improve themselves, but they're far too expensive. MF does give a good output, but in terms of cleanliness, I'd say the new Nikon D3x looks like'd give some MF films a run for their money...but it has limitations as well and is a lot more expensive, at least to start with... I do like the way you could buy, say, a Mamiya 645 system and get a digital back for it if you wanted...and just change viewfinders etc the way you change lenses - that aspect of medium format photography beats 35mm any day...but then you can't get very long lenses or high speed (be it fps or ISO) digital backs...and high speed film backs are hard to find as well. I suppose 35mm is far more flexible if you're trying to do a lot of different things and fast. But if it's studio work or landscapes etc, MF is the way to go...if you can afford it. God knows why I'm telling you this, Alex, since you're probably much more aware of the subtleties of 35mm compared to medium format than I am...! theChipmunk |
