Post subject:  White box thing
Currently taking photos with my G12 but it would be nice to have a plain white background/base - I think you guys probably have a dedicated box to display models and the like.

Make one or buy one?

EDIT: Like Paulzolo and the batmobiles.

I've worked with a large sheet of white card or paper before. With careful lighting it works quite well. That's the key, though. Getting good diffused lighting with such a set-up can be a bit of a trial.

You can get relatively small light cubes, like this one, for not-too-silly money. I managed to get a Wex own-brand 160cm cube/light tent system for about £20 a while back. It's almost big enough to live in!

The Batmobiles are shot using a very high-tech item. A piece of white A2 paper. This is lent up against a wall go give a curve, so no corner at the back is evident. This lets me use f22, and the white background just appears to be infinite. I have a small LED light array and a reflector to provide some light sources, but the room is south facing, so I get daylight to do a lot of the work.

And that is it. Next time I do a Batmobile shoot, I'll take some shots of the set up. It is truly primitive to behold.

You can buy light cubes pretty cheaply from eBay or Amazon.

I've used a big plain cotton sheet and a touch of exposure compensation (maybe a bit of post). Seems to work well enough in the absence of fancy lighting. I've also tried white card bent to produce an infinity curve and the diffuser component of my 5-in-1 reflector disc.

I promised photos of my Batmobile setup.

As you can see, I'm starting on another batch. In the photos you will see the light to the left a piece of paper on a pile of books and comics, which rests against the wall, and to the right a reflector (out of shot). It's in an alcove, and I use the ambient lighting in the room as well, so the shadows aren't as harsh as they could be. The results seem well received.
