looking for some advice on what software to use.
I usually only do some light editing of my photos (not because they are that fantastic  ) and have been using ufraw and gimp but I am now looking for something a bit more user friendly and maybe extend my meagre abilities post taking the picture also maybe better organising the end products.
So what I am asking is from your perspective what would be a better choice to use?

If you run Windows you could try paint.net

I'd agree. I've tried most of the free photo editing (as oppose to 'art making') packages that'll run under windows 7 and Paint.Net is as good as the rest in terms of functionality and has, to me anyway, the easiest interface to use.
