The way Curie detected radiation was by holding radium very close to her eye in a dim room. When the alpha particles hit your retina, you see a little flash or "scintillation".

Then she died of cancer.

Alpha particles wouldn't penetrate past the cornea. They only really become a problem when ingested, such as that Russian bloke and the Polonium 210.
