Tomorrow night is the work xmas party. I plan to spend less time dancing and more time taking pics. The problem I had last time was trying to capture fast moving stuff in a dark room. It didn't always work and either there was too little light in or there was too much motion blur. The smoke machine also made it difficult to autofocus.
Any hints or tips for this time around?

A flash, high ISO, wide open aperture and a camera with good AF.
Also - go dance with drunk nurses. Leave the camera at home.

Bear in mind I'm the youngest at age 30. The nurses are in their 50s. As are most of the staff TBH.

If you can't use a flash then maybe set shutter priority mode to something reasonable so there is no blur (1/100?) and use auto ISO to take care of the exposure. This is exactly what I did at Emily's Xmas party yesterday (although I did sometimes use the flash too). I haven't looked at them on the 'puter yet but I'm going to assume some noise reduction will be required and tweaks to the white balance but previewing the shots on the back of the camera they at least didn't look blurry.

A bit late seeing as it was 2 days ago, but I'd suggest shooting some video footage too. Video captures silly dancing for Youtube humiliation, and stills at 720p are perfectly usable for email and Facebook. Although the video was fine, the stills from the last Christmas I took a camera to are quite funny. The adults are perfectly crisp, and the children all blurry like ghosts  _________________jonbwfc's law: "In any forum thread someone will, no matter what the subject, mention Firefly." TBH I didn't take many pics this year. Nobody got on the dancefloor till around 2330 and I'd already left by 2300. I didn't recognise many of the 80s tunes especially as I expected them to be well known ones. Food was served slow and late albeit very nice. I do need a wider angle lens though to get photos of everyone in.
