You could make a film camera to do that using Blue Peter technology. You don't even need a lens - a single slit collimator from cardboard would work, and just roll the film past it steadily :shock:

I noted in the comments there was reference to an iPhone app that can do this technique.

Very nice - I've seen similar results from using a flatbed scanner as a camera.

There are indeed iPhone apps that do this - just search for slit scan photography.

I also have an app on my Mac which applies this technique to video. It’s very time consuming to generate, but here are the results.

This is a similar technique used to make that weridy sequence near the end of 2001 A Space Odyssey, and the classic Tom Baker Doctor Who opening sequence.
