How do you take pictures of the moon.
I took some lovely night time landscapes last night, but the moon shots are just a shimmering ball. I tried speeding up the shutter, on manual, but I obviously didn't do it enough. How do you get a clear shot of the moon?

It's bright. You need to expose as if shooting in daylight.

*nods* I took some a while back, I just used standard daytime techniques and as long a lens as you can get hold of.

This was taken last month at about 7am (about half and hour after sunrise) - There was some levels adjustment to cheat the colour a little.

Was that quite litterally through a 'scope? I'm guessing this isn't the full story: Exposure 0.013 sec (1/80) Aperture f/3.5 ISO Speed 200 Focal Length 12.8 mm Focal Length In 35mm Format 60 mm

I want to do this but as others have said spotting scope or telescope seems to be the way.

Of course you'll get better results that way, but my example was taken hand held on a 300mm lens.

*checks lens bag* My longest lens is an Vivitar f/3.8 150mm but I have a matched doubler - I guess that would make it a 300mm f5.6 ? Not sure I could shoot the moon hand-held with that. Frankly, all my pictures come out rubbish and I totally blame the equipment. It has nothing to do with me being incompetent. No sir. *strokes his MX fondly and wonders when it last had film in*

Yes, it was through a ’scope. And considering I was hand holding the camera, not a bad effort either.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Cheers, it's cropped down quite a bit from the original.
