Just been looking through some of my pics and can't tell if it's my screen or if the jpegs have become degraded.
Some of the detail seems to be missing and the pics are a bit cartoony.
Haven't edited any of them/resaved them but have copied the files to another server a couple of times.
Have yet to try looking at them on different screens.

Anyone else seen similar?

I'm really hoping it's the monitor so I can buy a new one.

It may well be the monitor.

Having the right colour profile for the monitor helps, as you can tell the viewing software to use that to give the best view of the image.

Thought so.
Now if only apple made a 24" that would work with my PC.
Looks like the HP that won the CPC lab test might be purchased then.

Would depend how it was processed after it came out of the camera and how it was uploaded. Saving a jpg in GIMP for example, will save the image at around 80% of the quality of the original. A jpg is a lossy format after all, but options are there to make it even more lossy and even more cartoony!

It could also be your browser if you are viewing them on flickr, some browsers at work are set to display low-res images...

It's just viewing the file at home from my hdd copied from the camera (a couple of years ago).
I always make copies of files for editing.

TBH I think it's the screen. 24" for £250 a few months ago seemed like a good deal but I think it's banding a bit.

Will drag out my expensive viewsonic for comparason (my baby 20")

Personally I would never edit a jpg. I always save my pics as either RAW or TIFF and once I'm done editing then save them as JPGs, as you keep as much of the original picture quality as possible.

At least that's what I've always been told...

I recently had a similar problem but mine manifested itself when I saved for the web - it came out darker than one just saved as a jpeg. Of course the compression doesn't help but one thing to check is when you use save for web settings it converts it to sRGB and you may have Adobe RGB set in the camera.

Finally Photobuckets new download settings are causing some peeps real problems - best to use the old method of downloading pics unless you've got a paid account!
