I read an article a while back too that had advice and a guide on essential shots for the day. I cant remember everything but I think it was something like....

Meet with the couple beforehand, find out what they want, etc
Scout the location
Take a spare camera(s), maybe even a good compact P&S
Make use of continous shooting to capture moments before/after the 'pose'
Get a family member or the best man on-side to help arrange guests and family portraits
Get the 'essential' shots:
  • Wedding dress (before its on the bride)
  • The bouquet
  • Bride getting ready
  • Groom getting ready
  • Groom and entourage
  • Bride arriving (car in shot?)
  • Walking down the Isle
  • Bride and Groom at the altar
  • 1st Kiss
  • Signing the register
  • Bride and Groom leaving
  • Confetti throwing
  • Formal shots after ceremony incl. family and guests
  • The cake before and during cutting
  • Speeches
  • 1st dance
  • +small shots, e.g. rings, table settings, flowers
  • +lots of candid shots

I shot a friends wedding, using my Minolta 35mm bodies. I was also her best man, so I really wasn't able to focus 100% on taking snaps, and I did a lot of running around.
That said, they loved what I did on the day, and thankfully there were others present with cameras (of course) so that took the pressure off somewhat. What was a little frustrating (for me) was that I handed over the negs to them, so that they could get any prints, blow ups, canvasses etc. made at their leisure.
I then got a phone call prior to their anniversary, asking for a canvas of the bouquet.
The picture that featured the bouquet best would require a crop, which means a hi-res scan of the neg and some editing.
But I didn't have the negs, they had, and they've lost them.

Anyway, I'm rambling, but I am in agreement with everything people have said here. I also think that your f1.4 50mm lens will be your new best friend on the day, as a lot of these wedding locations (and the reception) can be quite dark and a fast lens is a God send.

Was it a wedding or a civil partnership? :?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Does it matter?
Two people stood up in front of their assembled families and friends, made vows about their love for each other, signed some paper work and then we all went and had a lovely meal, speeches were made, wine flowed, a bouquet was thrown. A good time was had by all.

You'll be busy, that's for sure.
This thread has all the info that you need to go to the soon to be wed couple and get the information from them.
Once you have their plans you'll be in the best position to quote them a price.

Just one last word to the wise then Bratty; unlike almost all other photography, this is going to be the most important day of their lives, and each of it's sub-events is going to happen live and only once, there will be no retakes. Don't try anything too ambitious, keep it simple and do the basics well.

I hope all goes well for everybody involved and you all have a great time. :)

I have to say about the last thing I'd ever want to do is shoot a wedding, but I think your idea of being a second camera for the experience is sound.

I know a couple of wedding shooters, one of whom was a pioneer of the professional video side of it. It's a horrible job, long hours, heavy gear, annoying guests... Not for me.

I n ow a couple of people who bitched about their photographer wanting feeding. You would have thought that they could have put some food his way....

If it was for a 7 course sit down meal maybe I can see their concern, but for a quick nibble whilst everybody else was enjoying their meal then a little unjust maybe, especially if he had been there for several hours. I've been to a few weddings in my time and I can't recall ever seeing a photographer having a packed lunch.
