Large lounge, Tv set up one side computer desk/office on the other. I can stream via HDMI cable but the iMac speakers are quite weedy and the sound isn't right, coming from a single point a long way from the tv screen. So decent computer speakers such as Aego is an option.
Otherwise Appletv to stream and use the audio visual setup seems more the business. But I am not sure if it supports my set up as I don't put movies on iTunes but save them into an external to maintain space on the boot disc.

If I had £250 spare I would probably do both I suppose but there are plenty of other things that need attention right now.

Apple TV2 will only stream your own media from an iTunes library. You can set up iTunes so that all your music and movies are on an external HD to save space on your boot drive - mine are on a Time Capsule so that the PCs in the house have easy access to them, though this is less of an issue now with iTunes home sharing.

One niggle with ATV2 is that it only has optical audio out; great if you're feeding it into an AV setup, not so good if all you want to do is connect a pair of active speakers. I didn't want to make this my life's work, so ended up just using the headphone jack from the TV to plug in a pair of SoundSticks - works a treat and sounds way better than the TV speakers, but then I'm no audiophile <shrug> The downside to doing it this way with this is that if you want to stream music through these speakers, the TV has to be on.

I've got my aego's hooked up to my imac & the sound is amazing.

If you just want a sound upgrade then go for the aego's (you can get them fairly on ebay clicky)

WOW! That's near twice what I paid for them 5/6 years ago!

Quite amazing* to think how a diehard fanbase singing a product's praises on forums can affect pricing to such an extent.

*and equally, how frustrating; I've watched the earphones I want jump from £70 to £120 in 6 months. :(

6 and counting! 8-)

If we were a car audio or a PA forum we'd all be meeting up in a field somewhere daisy-chaining them together and dancing to tunes like loons!

The office is now officially "pimped"
